Privacy Policy
We collect the minimum we need to match volunteers with shelters, and we never sell your data.

What we collect
Account details: your name, email address and password (stored hashed by our authentication provider).
Volunteer profile: date of birth, city and state, student status, optional phone number, optional school details, emergency contact, and optional social handles.
Shelter details: organisation name, description, locations, and staff contact details.
Activity: shifts you book or cancel, and basic technical logs such as IP address used for security and abuse prevention.
Why we collect it
To create and secure your account, show you nearby shelters and shifts, let shelters confirm who is coming on site, send booking confirmations and reminders, and keep the platform safe.
We use date of birth to calculate age so shelters can apply their own minimum age requirements — we do not display your birth date to shelters.
What shelters can see
A shelter can see your name, age, city and contact details only once you have a confirmed booking on one of their shifts. Volunteers can see a shelter's public profile, and see staff contact details once a booking is confirmed.
Interrupted signups
If you start signing up and do not finish, we temporarily store the answers you gave against a random one-time code so you can pick up where you left off, including on another device. These drafts are only readable by our servers and are deleted once your account is created.
Emails
Account and booking emails are required for the service to work. Marketing updates are optional, separate from required platform consent, and you can opt out at any time.
Service providers
We use trusted providers for hosting, database and authentication, email delivery, and maps/geocoding to place shelter locations. They process data on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
Retention and security
We keep your profile while your account is active, and booking records for as long as shelters need them for their own records. Data is protected with encryption in transit, row-level access rules, and least-privilege access to sensitive contact details.
Your choices
You can view and edit your profile at any time, opt out of marketing emails, and request deletion of your account and personal data by emailing hello@nuzl.org.
Children
nuzl is not intended for children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we will delete it.
Questions? Email hello@nuzl.org.
